Rename an entity

Can I do this task?

  1. In the Navigation Pane, click Settings, click Customization, and then click Customize Entities.
  2. In the list of entities, open the entity that you want to rename.
  3. In the Display Name and Plural Name boxes, enter the new name for the entity.
  4. Click Save.

Entity display names must be unique. If you receive a message that an entity name already exists, you need to rename the other entity to use a different name. If the other entity is a non-customizable system entity, you must choose a different name.

  5. To achieve better consistency for the entity name change, you should also complete the following:

Edit the messages the entity displays to users to use the new entity name.

Edit the existing reports to use the new entity name.

Edit the online Help files that refer to this entity.

  6. When your customizations are complete, publish your customizations:
    • To publish customizations for the entity you are currently editing, on the Actions Action menu button menu, click Publish.
    • To publish customizations for all entities at once, open the Customize Entities list. On the More Actions menu, click Publish All Customizations.
    • To publish customizations for specific entities, open the Customize Entities list and select the entities you want to publish. On the Actions toolbar, click Publish.
  7. If you rename the entity after users are already using Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online, the change may not appear in the Navigation Pane for all users, because the Site Map is cached on client computers. Instruct your users to open Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online and then click F5 to refresh the navigation.
