In an aggressive sales or marketing organization, marketing lists for the entity types Accounts, Contacts, or Leads are being generated constantly. Since Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online requires selection of a list type, everyone creating a new list must choose the correct type for their marketing endeavor. Selecting an incorrect type can waste time and cause confusion and re-work. This article explains how to get started with a default marketing-list type. Since most organizations only need one marketing list type most of the time, setting a default eliminates errors in type selection in most instances, and speeds the creation of an accurate list.
How Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online uses marketing list types
A marketing list can be only one of three types, an Account, Contact, or Lead list. When marketing lists are created, you can specify the type of members that can be added to the list. For example, if you open a leads list, you can add new leads to the member list, but you cannot add accounts or contacts to it. This is very important because lead records represent potential customers who still need to be qualified or disqualified through your sales process, while accounts or contacts represent companies or individuals already tracked in the Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online database.
In some departments, most new marketing lists will be one type, (for example, Leads), therefore, the marketing manager may want to enable a default type value to appear in the Member Type list box to prevent mistakes. To do this, you can ask your system administrator or Partner to set the default typecode for marketing lists by following the steps in the Resource Center article "Customizing the Typecode Using an OnLoad Event."
Ask your system admin to create a default marketing type
The task of creating a default type is handled by a Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online system administrator or Partner. We suggest that managers ask the system administrator for help performing this task because a small amount of code needs to be added to Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online to create a default type. It will take only a short amount of time to configure the default and you can direct the admin to the article "Customizing the Typecode Using an OnLoad Event" for guidance.
